The "Freigeist" scheme from the Volkwagen Foundation (VolkswagenStiftung) is open to all disciplines and topics. The scheme mainly focuses on outstanding junior researchers who wish to carry out research at the boundaries between established fields of research. The initiative offers freedom for creative thinking, whilst at the same time providing the security to establish a junior research group for at least five years. In the long term, it provides the opportunity to establish a career within a scientific research organisation or university in Germany.
